He looks happy :) Although I can imagine him being happy with any kind of distraction if he only gets to stay in that cage (as opposed to being allowed to go outside).

About the animal in cages thing, its really simple..
Animals are usually territoristic, and happy to keep their boundaries. 'Freedom' is a relative thing, caged animals have freedom from worrying about where their next meal will come from, and freedom from having to worry about predators.
Where bars for us seem to tell the animals 'stay in', they seem to the animals to be telling spectators 'stay out'.
